About Sarah Castro Verde

Design Philosophy

Sarah Castro Verde approaches interior design as the practice of creating environments that support how people want to live. Her work is characterized by restraint, attention to detail, and a belief that successful design emerges from understanding client needs rather than imposing aesthetic formulas. Each project begins with careful listening and observation, identifying the functional requirements, aesthetic preferences, and emotional qualities that will make a space feel right for its occupants.

Her design methodology emphasizes materiality, proportion, and light—the fundamental elements that shape how we experience interior spaces. She works with a restrained palette, allowing architecture, natural materials, and carefully selected furnishings to create visual interest without unnecessary ornament. The goal is spaces that feel inevitable rather than decorated, where design decisions recede in favor of comfort, functionality, and a sense of belonging.

Background

Sarah came to interior design through architecture, completing her Bachelor of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, followed by a Master of Interior Design at the California College of the Arts. This architectural foundation shapes her approach: she thinks systematically about how spaces are organized, how light moves through rooms, and how material choices affect both function and perception. Before establishing her independent practice, she worked with several prominent Bay Area architecture and design firms, contributing to projects ranging from residential renovations to hospitality interiors.

Her practice is informed by a background in software engineering—she spent several years as a front-end developer before returning to design. This technical experience influences both her working methods and her interest in creating tools that make interior design processes more accessible and transparent. She maintains an active side practice developing calculators and reference tools for designers and homeowners, reflecting her belief that good design is both systematic and intuitive, combining rigorous analysis with aesthetic judgment.
